- A Resource About Reproductive Tract Infection

-
- Reproductive tract infections (RTIs) cause serious health problems for
- millions of women. They also lead to billions of dollars in health care
- costs. Some examples of RTI's include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis,
- trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis. Most are very common, affecting at
- least 1 in 4 Americans during their lives, and often produce no symptoms.
- Unfortunately, RTIs are not picked up by a Pap test. So unless a woman
- has symptoms or specifically inquires, her physician is unlikely to check for
- these infections. By offering a guide to talking with physicians about sexual
- health, the American Social Health Association (ASHA) hopes to open a
- dialogue that often does not take place during a routine physical exam. The
- guide "My Health Matters" is offered free through a toll free number
- 1-800-972-8500.
- Since many women find it hard to discuss this subject, the brochure
- provides samples of information you should provide to your doctor about your
- sexual practices, and offers counsel on how to start this important discussion
- during your next visit to your doctors office. The six tips on how to get the
- most from your doctor's visit can help you obtain the medical care and
- information you should have.
